OK, so, what we have left is the object browser + can create buckets.

All admin , policy management are removed.

    Also removed is OIDC .

@girish Will this fork be packaged instead?

@humptydumpty not immediately atleast. We will see in 6 months or so , if the fork is active and maintained and a healthy project. I can imagine it's a lot of work to develop something like MinIO.

To clarify, the MinIO CLI server still works as expected, the UI was restricted.

OpenMaxIO replaces that UI which will keep all the features unrestricted..

@robi I haven't managed to get OIDC work as well. the minio cli only does s3 operations mostly .

@girish ah, so that is one of the main casualties.

Did you ping the OpenMaxIO devs on this or drop a PR about OIDC there? Keeping it on their radar.

So, as long as we don't update the version we have now, for now, we are fine?

I am so disappointed in Minio. I understand that finding a business model with FOSS software is a pain in the butt, but there really is something to be said about how valuable "free at home; cost at work" can be as a model. It is how Bitwarden has managed to actually take a chunk out of 1Password's market share.

I have pushed a major package version of minio now. Existing installations won't auto-update . If you want to keep the old feature set, do not update the app. I recommend migrating away to something else (not sure what though), if you don't plan to update since it doesn't seem like it will get any more security updates even.

The change log for the new package:

IMPORTANT: MinIO has decided to remove all administration features from the console. The UI now only has an object browser. You must now use the mc CLI tool for creating keys and setting up permissions.

IMPORANT: OIDC Auth has been removed upstream as well. You can only access MinIO using admin credentials after this update. Access key creation is no longer possible .

What happens with Minio is really a dissapointment and hopefully openmaxio can work as replacement

The only affordable alternative I can see for now is not open source but pretty good, you can get 3T encrypted with S3 compatible object storage API, desktop sync app and more, for E15.00 per month @ mega.nz if that can help 😉

I haven't completely investigated yet only a quick overview though apparently garage could be a quite interesting alternative that could be explored, what's interesting is it integrates with NexCloud, Peertube, Mastodon and Matrix and more stuff, let's check it out.

EDIT: Complete S3 compatibility status here.
