Similar to the Contacts & Calendar apps, we are continuing to fill in the gaps of most common base apps for Cloudron. So we have released the initial versions of a Mail app. It is available for Cloudrons starting with version 10 which we are slowly rolling out at the moment.

We have held back for many years to go into the webmailer space, since now and then new promising forks of RainLoop (-> SnappyMail -> Tachyon) kept coming out which is generally great, but they mostly those didn't go into the direction we were looking for. The venerable Roundcube on the other hand has a proven record, but has moved under the Nextcloud umbrella, and we can assume it will continue to integrate further there or at least resources from that project will be spent on the webmailer within Nextcloud. SoGO on the other hand has pretty much stalled in development.
This leaves us with no great options in the long run for our userbase, yet we see the mail solution as a core part of Cloudron itself. All this led to the decision that we bite the bullet and work on a new Mail app. The great benefit here is that we can finally tackle longstanding shortcomings like better spam, filter and search integration, as we can tailor that much better now to the platform features.
With that said, the current state is usable but lacks a lot of the things we want to see. But before we define the scope of this, we would highly appreciate if use-cases and feature requests from our Cloudron user base determine more of the direction for that app. So if you have ideas or encountered shortcomings with using Cloudron as a mail solution, head over to the Mail forum section and let us know!

Can we use the new mail app alongside Roundcube?
I ask because I know RC comes preconfigured out of the box and any filters/rules in RC are effective even when I used Snappymail iirc. Thanks.
@humpty yes both are essentially just email clients so they do work in parallel, however when it comes to sieve scripts, the situation is more complex as sieve is somewhat like a programming language and the various email client UIs often cannot deal with "code" generated by the another app. So you mileage here may vary at the moment. Though since that is stored and runs on the mail server side, if a webclient sets up a sieve rule or filter, it works without that client having to be active.

As much as I would like an ActiveSync feature set, I think that is too much to ask. Is the Kopano community edition something worth considering? I believe @fbartels has done some work here. Also, I would be willing to pay Kopano for an affordable commercial license running on Cloudron. Perhaps others might be interested as well, especially if Kopano was maintaining this going forward and not the Cloudron team.

I looked into years ago for our old stack but with Cloudron providing its own mail store and smtp stack on top of the read-only nature of the app container it was not really a fit. Nowadays our stack is even more "heavyweight" (due to the need to be able to scale to 10.000s of users on a single node) so I don't think it would be a good fit for an app.
