If this is a OpenVZ VPS you're trying to set up, this might not be possible. As stated here: Cloudron does not support running on ARM, LXC or OpenVZ.

Currently only ext4 is supported, mostly for reasons of keeping testing burden low. @pbaesse were you able to use ext4 for your root partition and were you able to install Cloudron? If so maybe we can mark this as "solved"

I’m also interested in running Cloudron on other file systems. What would happen if the error was circumvented? 😈

When Cloudron started we used btrfs, but it was extremely unstable (atleast the kernels from VPS providers) and it will result in random crashes in the kernel. I just looked up again now and saw that RedHat has dropped support for btrfs. Not sure, if it's worth investing time on this, will keep this in mind if others request this as well.

Will you support xfs in a future?

I have a favorite host called Greenhost. They are carbon neutral, privacy friendly, and full-disk encryption is possible.
                But they only support xfs.

I sent them ext4 support request to them but they won't be able to do in near future.
So I'm writing here as xfs support request šŸ™‚

@hiyukoim in the meantime you may want to check out some of the other renewable powered VPS providers...

I've compiled a list here (oh, damn, can't share my list atm because it's hosted on my Nextcloud and I've messed up my Nextcloud config file... will share full list here once I've sorted that, in the meantime check out https://www.hetzner.com/cloud who are my favourite green VPS provider šŸ™‚ ):

@yusf At one point back in Dec 2017 I was trying to install on a VPS running ... Virtuozzo, pre-7, and I just commented out the /ext4 requirement and Cloudron installed fine, and as far as I could tell for the 4 months or so I used it, it ran fine. Later the company upgraded from Virtuozzo Container to Virtuozzo KVM, and I used a backup to restore to the new Virtuozzo KVM, and then later again to a proper /etx4. I'm not recommending anything, just sharing one experience. I did it initially just to see what would happen if I commented out the /ext4 requirement, and since it worked and installed, I just stuck with it.

Technically, all we need is a VM with ubuntu. Any deeper integration (like DNS, Storage) is easy to do if the hosts partner with us. If you know any hosting providers/VPS providers, feel free to ask them to reach out to us at support@cloudron.io . We are more than happy to add them as a supported provider (but we will need supporting things like an account there, a way to test periodically etc).

@jdaviescoates Thank you, I will have a look.
I love Greenhost as they are both eco-friendly and privacy friendly (which enables fill disk encryption).
I hope I can find an equivalent šŸ™‚
