      I recently migrated my cloudron from AWS to DO--amazingly smooth process, thanks guys!--and now I'm thinking to go with DO's automatic snapshot plan for backing up and ditch my S3 backup (I'll reconnect it if I ever need to migrate again).

      Is there anything advising against this? Thanks for any opinions.

        Hi @jordanurbs,

        the viability of snapshots for backup has for example been discussed in https://forum.cloudron.io/topic/4161/disc-snapshots?_=1628139201934.

          To add to what was said in the other thread, I recommend storing backups in some other provider than your VPS. Many years ago before Cloudron, I used to self host on Digital Ocean. went on vacation and my credit card failed. Digital Ocean deleted both my VPS and all the snapshots and there was no way to recover 😕 Not DO's fault of course, but lesson learnt the hard way.

            @girish That's interesting because I was just exploring storing backups on DigitalOcean Spaces as they are called but the process is needlesly complicated and also didn't work. Cloudron refers to buckets in DigitalOcean but there is nothing in the DO UI that says buckets. I actually used Wasabi out of Boston in the past but am still looking for a good backup solution that to be blunt: does not overcharge for something so simple.

              @wexlerj Ah, good point. In DO terminology, a "Space" is a "Bucket". I never actually noticed that they don't use the term bucket until you told me now.

                @girish Thanks for responding. I am now trying to get Wasabi to work but I am getting an error. I believe I set everything up propely. I will try some and let you know - I posted my error message elsewhere in the forum.

                  @girish I think its a better idea to keep a backup in a different place than the original anyways FYI.

                      @fbartels said in Backup Preference: Snapshot vs S3?:

                      Hi @jordanurbs,

                      the viability of snapshots for backup has for example been discussed in https://forum.cloudron.io/topic/4161/disc-snapshots?_=1628139201934.

                      Yes, and to quote what @nebulon pointed out there:

                      @nebulon said in Disc snapshots:

                      Disk snapshots or VPS snapshots don't work well with Cloudron, since backups are per-app and not per-server on Cloudron. This is to be able to rollback/restore individual apps without interfering with the system or other apps running on it.

                      Still for a secondary fallback backup solution this can still be recommended.

                      That's what I do. I do Cloudron backups to a Hetzner Storage Box, plus pay Hetzner for their automated backups, plus occasionally do a snapshot too.

                      Although really I ought to backup to another provider too, to avoid the potential issues @girish once had with DO.

                      I'll probably choose another eco VPS provider to do that at some point https://ud.coop/ecovps

                      I use Cloudron with Gandi & Hetzner
