Out of the Blockchain-hype there was storj.io V2 storage-network. a fully encrypted, decentralised storage.

Now, storj.io is moving to V3 - a full S3-compatible network. still decentralised and with high encryption.

Tardigrade is the enterprise, production-ready version of the Storj network, complete with guaranteed SLAs.

      Affordable
      Performant
      Resilient
      Secure
      Predictable
      Intuitive

      How it Works

With Tardigrade cloud storage, your files are encrypted and split into pieces client-side before being distributed across our network of high-performance storage nodes.

OSS partners, i.e. nextcloud, minio, cloudron?,

who integrate the tardigrade.io into their sw. they get paid a share on every byte, the enduser store into the storj network!

See how we treat our partners.

Tardigrade, and our open-source parent company Storj Labs are very passionate about supporting, building, and using open source software. It’s this passion that led us to create our Open Source Partner Program. With this program, every time your users store data on Tardigrade, we will share a generous portion of every dollar earned with our open-source partners. Forever. . .

      Storagenode Operators:

everybody can run a V3 storj-node, and rent the spare space, one might have. (from RPI upwards).

The V3 Network is in beta, production ready in autumn.

from my experience over the years: very innovative, deliver high quality software, keep there milestone-timetable, good support.
      definitely worth a look.

@chymian Hi, Cloudron team - how about integrating Storj as the backup target now? Their S3 api/interface should now be ready.

@tadeas I guess you are referring to https://github.com/storj/storj/wiki/S3-Gateway ? You can already use an arbitrary S3 gateway btw in the Backups view dropdown.

Once it reaches production, we can add it to the Backup providers dropdown as a proper option.

This is an awesome thing. Can we work on getting this as a deployable app?

Would love to spin up some additional cloudron boxes with this to run on it to support this technology.

For me that is already straitened at WASABI.

              Wasabi
              1TB storage with
              Unmetered downloads
              $5.99/mth
              UNbeatable.

              Tardigrade io
              1TB storage
              1TB download
$55.00 / mth quite less than S3 but then far far from wasabi.

              Cheers!

The only hiccup could be the VPS provider not liking any crypto-related software running on their servers. Some kind of alert about this would need to be included the Cloudron docs for it.

@girish Tardigrade.io is now rebranded Storj DCS, now it fully reaches to the production environment and also all three regions are fully compatible with S3 Gateway.

Here is a brief email from Storj DCS

We’re thrilled to launch Storj DCS (Decentralized Cloud Storage)

First off, thanks so much for being a Tardigrade customer. We have some big news. We’ve officially launched our new and improved decentralized cloud object storage service, Storj DCS (formerly Tardigrade). We’ve been listening to our community and customers and understand everyone wants a decentralized cloud storage experience that is unified and easy to understand.

Because of your feedback, we’re now rolling our Tardigrade product back under the Storj brand, and it will be called Storj DCS. It’s still the same great service, just under an easier-to-understand name with new and improved features.

We’re also updating our brand mark (logo) to fit the new look and feel of Storj. We’ve also updated our website, and now people who visit Tardigrade.io will be redirected to corresponding pages on Storj.io.

                    An updated brandmark & website

We’re updating our brand mark (logo) to fit the new look and feel of Storj. We’ve also updated our website, and now people who visit Tardigrade.io will be redirected to corresponding pages on Storj.io.

                    S3-compatible gateway is now live

Our S3-compatible gateway is now live, as are several new architectural improvements. These updates represent a huge leap forward in privacy, security, resiliency, S3 compatibility, usability, performance, economics, and supported use cases.

With the new multi-tenant gateway, developers can simply change a few lines of code in their existing Amazon S3-backed applications to start storing data on Storj DCS immediately. The update also includes new features like multi-part upload to improve overall performance when storing large objects on Storj DCS.

                    Much easier on the wallet!

We’ve saved the best news for last —we’re rolling out new pricing! We’re reducing storage fees from $10 per TB per month to $4.00, reducing our egress bandwidth fee from $45 per TB to $7.00, and getting rid of the per object fees. As long as your data meets the new standards, you won’t see any other costs. Check out our updated Terms of Service and billing documentation for the details.

I hope soon Storj DCS will be integrated into Cloudron Backups

https://docs.storj.io/api-reference/s3-gateway is their storage gateway. It looks like this has to be run alongside the application and not provided by their service.

Revisiting this, it could be quite a bit cheaper than Wasabi if using rsync for backups or less frequent tarball backups (eg weekly):

Separate from this, I'm thinking about starting a home node to get into the details of this.

@marcusquinn I guess apart from pricing, one also needs to know how durable and reliable the storage and service is. Do we have any info on this?

@girish Well, the idea is that the data is stored literally all over the world on the disks of whoever is running the software. There is supposed to be redundancy also. I recall when I first looked into this some times back (years), a line stood out to me that basically said that due to how spread out your data is, you won't ever lose "everything", such as a when a backup disk or storage site goes down (OVH's fire would be a recent example). I was running a 1TB disk that very quickly filled up (with other people's data mind you - encrypted). But I realized I couldn't keep my disk online 24/7, so I slowly decreased the amount of space I was allowing my disk to make available, and about halfway to zero, some algorithm decided my disk wasn't reliable enough and all the data disappeared/was moved off. Not bad. I guess. Though tech I think has moved on a lot from when I first used it, the basic idea is still the same.

But as I mentioned elsewhere, plenty of VPS providers prohibit crypto activities, and this is crypto - not mining, but it could run afoul of someone's TOS. Be careful!

For anyone wanting to run a node, I get the impression that you are best building a dedicated rig than has a CPU optimal for mining Monero or RandomX coins, GPUs that are optimised for mining Ethereum, and then HDs for earning Storj.

My research suggests that if you do all of this, the ROI is about 100% / yr.
