Storagenode Operators:

everybody can run a V3 storj-node, and rent the spare space, one might have. (from RPI upwards).

The V3 Network is in beta, production ready in autumn.

@chymian Hi, Cloudron team - how about integrating Storj as the backup target now? Their S3 api/interface should now be ready.

@tadeas I guess you are referring to https://github.com/storj/storj/wiki/S3-Gateway ? You can already use an arbitrary S3 gateway btw in the Backups view dropdown.

Once it reaches production, we can add it to the Backup providers dropdown as a proper option.

The only hiccup could be the VPS provider not liking any crypto-related software running on their servers. Some kind of alert about this would need to be included the Cloudron docs for it.

S3-compatible gateway is now live

Our S3-compatible gateway is now live, as are several new architectural improvements. These updates represent a huge leap forward in privacy, security, resiliency, S3 compatibility, usability,  performance, economics, and supported use cases.

With the new multi-tenant gateway, developers can simply change a few lines of code in their existing Amazon S3-backed applications to start storing data on Storj DCS immediately. The update also includes new features like multi-part upload to improve overall performance when storing large objects on Storj DCS.

We’ve saved the best news for last —we’re rolling out new pricing! We’re reducing storage fees from $10 per TB per month to $4.00, reducing our egress bandwidth fee from $45 per TB to $7.00, and getting rid of the per object fees. @marcusquinn I guess apart from pricing, one also needs to know how durable and reliable the storage and service is. Do we have any info on this?

@girish Well, the idea is that the data is stored literally all over the world on the disks of whoever is running the software. There is supposed to be redundancy also. I recall when I first looked into this some times back (years), a line stood out to me that basically said that due to how spread out your data is, you won't ever lose "everything", such as a when a backup disk or storage site goes down (OVH's fire would be a recent example). I was running a 1TB disk that very quickly filled up (with other people's data mind you - encrypted). But I realized I couldn't keep my disk online 24/7, so I slowly decreased the amount of space I was allowing my disk to make available, and about halfway to zero, some algorithm decided my disk wasn't reliable enough and all the data disappeared/was moved off. Not bad. I guess. Though tech I think has moved on a lot from when I first used it, the basic idea is still the same.

But as I mentioned elsewhere, plenty of VPS providers prohibit crypto activities, and this is crypto - not mining, but it could run afoul of someone's TOS. Be careful!

For anyone wanting to run a node, I get the impression that you are best building a dedicated rig than has a CPU optimal for mining Monero or RandomX coins, GPUs that are optimised for mining Ethereum, and then HDs for earning Storj.

My research suggests that if you do all of this, the ROI is about 100% / yr.
