Is this something that is supported yet?? I see it was mentioned once. It would make me ever so happy if it was...

I am not an expert on WordPress Multisite, but if the individual pages should have to be delievered on different subdomains/domains then this is not supported with Cloudron.

@nebulon I run a few WordPress multisites. I (and I think most people) prefer having the sub-sites at sub-domains, but it is also possible have them at sub-directories:

The sites in a network have different URLs. You can choose one of two ways for the URL to specify the site:
Each site has a different subdomain. For example: site1.example.com, site2.example.com.
Each site has a different path. For example: example.com/site1, example.com/site2

In fact, it's more than possible, cloudron is running wordpress multisite pretty well with the sub-directories settings, I know for sure, because I do run one on my cloudron. I haven't tried with sub-domains but indeed, that should take a special twist from CR to run this since it is handling all subdomains internally.

              Excellent to know!

Can you also confirm that it works well with Domain Mapping? It says there that it does normally work with subdirectories, so I'm assuming so?

@jdaviescoates well, I'm gonna have to guess that ONCE Cloudron team has found the needed tweak to make sure that the "subsites can be created without issues", as mentioned on the WordPress' Domain Mapping information page you quoted, being the reason why we are having this discussion, then yes, of course, the Domain Mapping feature will also work perfectly.

@micmc I'm confused, I thought you have confirmed yourself that you are able to create subdirectory based subsites without issue? What have I missed?

@jdaviescoates sorry for the late response I've not seen this until now.

As I said, I can confirm it works with SUB-directories, but that is not the same as sub-DOMAINS. It's the latter that requires the needed TWEAK because of the internal DNS management in CR 😉

when cloudron will support multi subdomain for the same deployed app, it will worth to deploy an unmanaged WordPress to use the multisite advantage with multi-subdomain strategy which would allow you to use fully qualified domain name (without subdomain) such as

                      • bob.net
                      • bib.org
                      • bub.com

                      under the same wordpress instance.

But for now, my understanding of cloudron with a multi subdomain wordpress is only

                      • bob.bob.net
                      • bib.bob.net
                      • bub.bob.net

                      is possible

@JOduMonT If you leave the location field empty when installing wordpress, you can install to bob.net, bub.com etc. You can also setup a redirect in similar fashion in an existing app.

So I don't really understand by reading this thread, but does WP multisite with subdomains work on Cloudron now? Is there a workaround so it doesn't conflict with the subdomain mapping that cloudron does internally for apps?

@girish So if I leave the domain empty I can set up top level domains that are not redirects? Or did I misread your comment?

Sounds like it'd save some time if there were a separate WP multisite App with these options?

@derin @Lonk Cloudron doesn't support WP multi-site. We have not scheduled this feature yet. But if we do, it will only be after Cloudron 6. So, atleast 2-3 months from now.

Correct, if you leave the location field empty, then the top level domain will not be a redirect.

Just to make something explicit : if you leave the location field empty you can set up one top-level domain that is not a redirect.

@girish Okay, to clarify (because I still believe I may be misunderstanding), leaving the location field empty (null, blank), every "Redirection" I add in the Cloudron Redirection App settings will actually make Cloudron behave as if x domain is the top level domain for that particular app and there can be multiple?

Oh, gotcha @mehdi just made it clear that only one top level domain is allowed with this method and in testing, that is true. So I added a Feature Request for Domain Aliases on Cloudron. WP Multisite won't be the only app that benefits this. Every control panel allows for domain aliases for different reasons and I think this is an important feature.
