I have always left the Branding settings as "Cloudron" for now, just with my logo and such. But recently started thinking about renaming it to something different, just not sure what. I noticed in testing that the name of the server is what's used also in new user welcome emails. So for example it'll say "Welcome to Cloudron" if your server is named Cloudron. That's what sort of got me thinking of changing the name so it'd maybe read something like "Welcome to d19 Hosting Services" or something like that.

This got me thinking... what do you guys name your Cloudron instances? I think it'd be fun to share our Cloudron server names, creative or not, if anyone has moved away from the default Cloudron server name. I'm guessing some people have come up with some great names for theirs. Or if you've always just kept it as Cloudron, let that be known too. 🙂

Not much creativity here, but open for suggestions 😄 My bigger ones that have multiple tenants are C1, C2, C3,... and the exclusive ones have just the companyname.

My cloudron server name is Drobak as I have fond memories when I lived in norway.

BTW, there is an RFC on how to name your server - https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1178 🙂

I'm just using the default Cloudron name but I use DWS to remotely access my PC's and I have them named after animals + their case form size. For example, my CAD ITX PC at work is called GrizzlyCub while my CAD PC at home is PapaGrizzly.

For the VPS server names: cloudron01, cloudron02 etc, should cover us up to 99 but maybe should be thinking bigger long-term.

For the Cloudron Panel: Cloudron MQ, Cloudron BL etc.

I try to avoid hiding service branding as I believe in co-promoting and being overt about the brands of services we use for various things because overall I see it as an advantage for anyone copying what we do as it adds to the communities we enjoy.

In your instance, I'd think something like "Welcome to Cloudron with d19" might be an option?

I don't see any harm in people looking up the platform as services offered are usually for time & experience as a VAR or MSP.

It really depends on the purpose. If you install a Cloudron instance for a customer, try to use his name. There are two possibilities: company name or domain name. The name should have a clear reference to the company, because employees must log in on the dashboard. There is the Login to XXX and the Welcome to XXX initial mail.

If you install many Cloudrons to offer apps to customers, I'm a huge fan of a more generic approach like srv201102.cloudron.safeserver.de
In that example srv = server 20 = year 11 = month 02 = second instance in november. Customers get the welcome to srv201102.cloudron.safeserver.de mail.

For personal purposes I am not that creative. There I follow the domain approach.

Totally, same here. I'm definitely not trying to hide Cloudron in any way - in fact I promote it on my website as a great tool that I recommend. I was just thinking of making it more fun for my users after I realized the server name is used in the Welcome emails, haha.

@d19dotca I always lean towards short names that distill the essense of the project.. mainly from oldskool days of having to type a lot..

for example a transcendental meditation group with lots of long name projects has a server name of om.

On the flip side, SpaceX has some lovely names that are hard to forget for their Iain Banks' Culture novels given names; Of Course I Still Love You (OCYSLY), Just Read The Instructions (JRTI), etc.

I named mine HomeBase, as in my little personal corner of the internet 🙂 sure, it's still hosted on someone's servers and not actually in my home, but same concept right??

Maybe I'll name mine after Star Trek characters, or maybe home planets. lol. I mean "Cloudron" practically sounds like it could be from the Star Trek universe anyways.

                        Welcome to Vulcan.

                        😄
