Probably old news but I was surprised to see NVMe SSD when creating a new droplet today. To add to that AMD too !

@girish I spotted this today as well. I was wondering if it's possible to migrate my server to one of the new AMD ones. If not, I'll have to backup my Cloudron server and make the switch when I'm porting over to Ubuntu 20.04.

Kinda what Upcloud.com has had for years at 20% less cost and Hetzner.com for almost half that price. that.

Good markup for DO though 🤷 I used it once, nice app store and dashboard.

@marcusquinn How on earth is Hetzner that cheap? I wish they had a US location with that kind of pricing 😊

@humptydumpty Dunno but very happy with the performance, interface and features.

Finland is the closest they offer, and I expect most wouldn't notice perceptible latency.

The real question for me is; how is Digital Ocean that expensive with their economies of scale?

If you want even cheaper and with a US data centre, I've been happy with contabo.com too. Doesn't have all the control panel eye-candy and features but their support is responsive, capable and will go above and beyond the call of duty if its a reasonable request.

@marcusquinn I think I'm delusional. Am I actually getting all THAT for THAT price with Contabo?

@humptydumpty I like Contabo prices, but dislike that they aren't powered by renewable energy.

I use Cloudron with Gandi & Hetzner

@humptydumpty if you want another option in the US with similar sizing and pricing, take a look at SSD Nodes

@robi I signed up for a server and they marked my order as fraud. I sent in a ticket and I'm still waiting for a reply. In the meantime, I read some negative reviews about them, like the speeds drop over time once they oversell the servers and they have strict/weird rules in their TOS. Have you used them before?

@humptydumpty I couldn't find any good reviews on that one, felt like actual too good to be true pricing.

@marcusquinn The pricing is a bit misleading or so it felt to me. The advertised pricing is for a 3 year term. The server I selected had a $89/yr tag but ended up at $129/yr when I selected a 1 yr payment term. I haven't heard back from them yet. If it's this hard to get help when I'm throwing money at them, imagine what it's like when I need tech support. I'm glad the order got marked as fraud. I dodged a bullet there.

@humptydumpty yeah, I've had a few booboo's in my first experience, but learned that you can ask their support to migrate your server to a less busy node and they're happy to do it.

I now run 4 of these.

If price is not an issue, there are other options.

They try to get you to commit to the longer term (3yr) to get that price.
So you can't get a 1 year term for that price. It's correct as it is.. they just don't make it easy to see ;-/

They could be more transparent about that, but it's technically correct as posted.

@robi Hours later and their billing department hasn't replied to my ticket yet. I'll stick with DO for now and will look into switching again when Cloudron 7 is released. Girish added a nice feature to help with VPS migrations.

@humptydumpty I noticed they take first level support from India, hence the longer response times for US customers.

@robi I got a reply from billing and they instructed me to place a new order with no proxy or vpn enabled. Total ticket time for placing a new order was 12 hours.

I wouldn't even know what to say to convince them to switch me to a less congested node or even how to check for server lag/speed. I've been there before with shared hosts before moving to "the cloud" and I would be going in circles with tech support. DO, although pricey, have been rock solid and I never had to contact them for server issues.

@robi @marcusquinn @jdaviescoates You guys rocked my world because I thought DO was "cheap". I used to pay double my current DO server cost when I was with Cloudways (also a DO server with the same specs) and their CP was limited (this was years back, idk now). Since then, I switched to ServerPilot + DO but I was limited to Wordpress or I had to install apps the old fashioned way which I'm not that good at. Then, I found Cloudron. Life changing experience.

I'm interested in getting test servers with both Hetzner and Contabo now and seeing how fast they are for US users. I use a CDN for my WP sites so I might not even notice any lag. I prefer to host in the EU rather in the US if performance isn't an issue simply because the EU has better privacy laws. It's still the wild wild west here šŸ™‚

@girish I'm not sure what the forum policy is about mentioning other companies but please let me know if it's a problem. Thanks!

@marcusquinn DO is my goto for quick VMs or if I need to spin up an app ASAP without cloudron. I also use their Spaces service for backups. Decent price if you only need the smaller VMs. Been using them for years without any issues at all.
